What We Do

Youth Mentoring Program

Youth program involves various activities to help immigrant and refugees youth succeed in Life.

THESE INCLUDES

Volunteer with the Youth Mentoring Program

Refugee and other immigrant youth face significant challenges as they try to adapt to American culture, reestablish community and friendships, and adjust to new schooling and educational expectations. These obstacles can be crippling. But they don’t have to be.

Why Youth Mentoring?

  • The Youth Mentoring Program (YMP) of Mundeke Gospel Mission exists to empower students to identify and resolve obstacles to thriving in their environments such as: school, work place, family, and community.

  • We do this by creating spaces that will cultivate mentoring relationships between refugee and immigrant youth from our community and volunteers. In these creative spaces, we will be teaching and modeling interpersonal skills, promoting and practicing disciplines that lead to emotional and physical health, equipping students with better study habits and time management skills, and offering civic and social engagement opportunities in the Triad.

The YMP AT MGM FOCUSES ON:

  • Building bridges for trusting relationships in youths’ schools, work places, and families.
  • Teaching and modeling interpersonal skills, time management disciplines, and study skills
  • Fostering an environment of emotional and physical health
  • Training mentors to act as cultural guides for refugee and immigrant youth

1. UNITY UNITY MEETING

Youth Unity Meeting, is a program initiated by MGM in collaboration with local churches in our community. The primary goal of this initiative is to gather college youths and young professionals once a month to engage in discussions on various topics that directly impact the youth demographic. Through the Youth Unity Meeting, we aim to create a supportive environment where participants view one another as an extension of their own families. This sense of camaraderie and support enables individuals to assist each other whenever the need arises, fostering a strong sense of community within our youth population. We believe that by coming together and engaging in thoughtful conversations, we can address important issues, share experiences, and ultimately empower each other to navigate the challenges that affect us as young people in today’s society.

2. COMMUNITY HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROGRAM

  • Refugees and other immigrants endure profound physical and psychological trauma after leaving home, fleeing violence and persecution and often being separated from family and loved ones.
  • It’s no surprise, then, that many of these courageous men, women and children arrive in the U.S. with the emotional and physical scars associated with that experience.
  • Unfortunately, adjusting to a new culture in the U.S. often only adds to these scars, as families navigate the new emotional challenges that come with language barriers, financial stress and other household problems
  • MGM is undertaking to address a significant issue in our community. It has come to our attention that many individuals in our community lack the necessary knowledge and support to navigate the complexities of the health system effectively. Specifically, there is a lack of awareness among community members regarding the need to reapply and satisfy requirements for their medical benefits. This gap in understanding often results in individuals missing out on crucial opportunities for healthcare access and support. In response to this pressing need, MGM has made the decision to introduce Community Health Navigators. These dedicated individuals will be tasked with moving throughout the community, offering guidance and education on how to navigate the health system successfully. Additionally, they will provide valuable assistance to community members in applying for and accessing essential benefits. Our overarching goal with this initiative is to achieve our 2027 vision of ensuring that 100% of community members have access to health insurance. By investing in Health Navigators, we aim to empower individuals with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. We believe that this initiative will not only improve health outcomes within our community but also foster a greater sense of empowerment and agency among our residents. By working together to enhance health system literacy, we can create a stronger, healthier, and more resilient community for all.

The refugee experience is characterized by persecution, violence, separation from family and loved ones, loss of personal possessions, and escape to unfamiliar places.

  • Most refugees have endured profound physical and psychological trauma and arrive in the Triad with the emotional and physical scars associated with that experience. Mundeke Gospel Mission Community Health and Wellness Program is here to respond with on-site therapy and counseling, and individual and family case management services for clients with serious or acute medical needs.

  • Community Health Workers and volunteers help clients navigate the often difficult and confusing medical system, provide transportation to appointments and procedures, and help clients access medications — ultimately resulting in the empowerment of clients to become self-sufficient in managing their own health care.

3. SWAHILI DAY CELEBRATION

This a yearly program was specifically created with the aim of bringing together our clients, community members, and our American friends and neighbors who have a shared interest in learning about the diverse cultures within our community.

During the event, We pray for the kids and Youths going back to school and give them school back pack, we always have the opportunity to share delicious food, unite in prayers, engage in meaningful discussions about the challenges faced by our community, and celebrate the remarkable achievements within our diverse communities. This will be a wonderful occasion to come together, foster connections, and promote a sense of unity and understanding among all participants.

4. JEREMIAH 29:7 PROJECT

The Jeremiah 29:7 Project is a special initiative that we have created to bring together immigrants and refugees from all corners of the world in a spirit of unity and prayer.

As a collective group, we gather to pray for the United States as a beacon of hope and refuge for those seeking safety and prosperity. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the opportunities and blessings this country has provided us, and we believe in the power of prayer to uplift and protect this nation.

During our prayer meetings, we come together to lift up our law enforcement teams, local and federal governments, and to pray for peace and harmony in the countries we have come from. It is a moment of unity and reflection, where we sing hymns and songs of praise in various languages, celebrating the diversity and richness of our backgrounds.

This special event takes place annually on the first week of the month of February, and this year is no exception. We would be honored to have you join us in this meaningful gathering as we come together in solidarity and faith.
